Frequently asked questions

1. How do I register my child/children for St. Mary’s School?

Answer: Registration is the first Tuesday of February from 9:00 am to 11:00 am prior to the fall your child will attend school. If you do not attend registration, you may fill out registration forms in the school office. Our waiting lists do not roll over from year to year.

2. What do I need to bring to registration day?

Answer: You will need a birth certificate, a baptismal certificate if your child was not baptized at St. Mary’s, and your child’s social security number. There is a non-refundable fee of $25.00 per family.

3. Is bus service offered for the children?

Answer: Bus service is provided only for those families that reside in the Mokena Public School District.

4. What is the class size for each grade?

Answer: Our kindergarten has two classes with an enrollment of twenty-five each. For the 2009-2010 school year there will be two classes with a maximum of thirty students for grades 1-5. Grades 6-8 will have one class with a maximum of thirty-six students. Each year we are adding a class, so that eventually grades 1-8 will all have two classes with a maximum of thirty each.

5. When does school begin/end each day?

Answer: Our school day begins at 8:10 am, the tardy bell rings at 8:15 and we release at 2:40 pm.

6. Which extra-curricular activities are offered?

Answer: Our school has a band program with times during the school day and after school. Band is offered in grades 4-8. After school programs include Glee Club for grades 2-8 and junior high students may participate in Drama Club and Swing Choir. Beginner and advanced chess is offered depending on your child’s skill level. We also have student council for grades 4-8. Representatives for each classroom are elected by the younger grades and officers are elected from grades 7 and 8. There is also a yearbook club which is open to grade 8 students. Parent volunteers organize Daisy, Brownie, Girl Scout, and Cub Scouts which also meet after school.

7. What sport’s programs are offered and at what grade level do these begin?

Answer: St. Mary School offers basketball and volleyball for boys and girls at the 5-8 grade level.

8. How often do the children attend Mass?

Answer: Students in grades 1-8 attend mass weekly on Wednesday at 9:00 am. Our kindergarteners begin the year attending Mass once a month during the first
trimester, twice a month through the second trimester, and three times a month in the third trimester.

9. Is there a lunch program available?

Answer: JHSweis Catering, offers lunch daily. Meals are prepared on the school premises. There is an entrée choice and soup and salad bar. Choices are made for the entire month and paid in advance.

10. What types of volunteer programs for parents are available?

Answer: Parent volunteering is always welcome at St. Mary’s. You must have completed a “Protecting God’s Children Workshop” before volunteering. On the first day of school, there is a “Back to School Tea” where parents may sign up for various volunteer opportunities including classroom parties. Hot Meals, Inc., our lunch program is staffed by our school volunteers. You may volunteer once a week or as little as once a month. Volunteers for field trips will be requested by teachers when needed.
