St. Mary School is a vibrant, warm and welcoming Catholic school, located in Mokena, serving students in preschool through grade 8. The school community of talented students, supportive parents, dedicated teachers and staff, experienced administration, and an approachable pastor create a caring family atmosphere. This Catholic school’s goal is to help each child grow to their greatest potential, both spiritually and academically.
St. Mary School added a 4-year-old early childhood program for the 2015 -2016 school year and a 3-year-old program for the 2017-2018 school year. The program design and tuition schedule are available on the website. The school looks forward each year to welcoming young children and their families into this Catholic community and providing an academic foundation for kindergarten readiness.
Since St. Mary Catholic School opened in 1949, the school’s size has grown to now accommodate two classes per grade. Thanks to a parishioner-funded eight million dollar parish expansion in 2003, the facilities are state of the art. School facilities include a music room, art room, library, computer lab, science lab, nineteen classrooms, and a cafeteria. In addition, there is a spacious gymnasium, unlike most elementary schools have ever seen. Additional renovations completed in 2017 included the 3-year-old preschool classroom, an updated library, and a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics ) Lab. Despite the growth over the years, the mission has not changed – “Preparing students for the future through spiritual and academic excellence.”
“Our ministry is to help students recognize, foster, and exhibit their role in carrying out our Catholic values and traditions,” says Beth Cunningham, Principal, St. Mary Catholic School. “We do this through infusing our beliefs throughout our curriculum and by celebrating our faith when we come together at weekly school Masses and Faith Families.”
The faculty and staff of St. Mary School provide an exceptional learning environment that allows students to achieve their full potential. St. Mary students continue to perform above the national average at all grade levels in all tested content areas year-after-year. The core curriculum is reviewed annually in order to help all students develop critical thinking skills through engaged learning. This includes a variety of learning opportunities, including the use of technology at all grade levels. The school’s one-to-one technology initiative provides each student in grades 6 through 8 with an individual iPad, a class set of iPads in grades 3 through 5, and preschool through grade 2 have designated classroom iPads and SmartBoards© for educational use. Primary students also benefit from a certified reading specialist and dedicated teacher aides.
All faculty and staff participate in the Church’s ministry to assist parents in their role as the primary teachers of faith to their children. “We are proud of our students and feel blessed to be part of their educational and spiritual journey.” Cunningham continues, “We work hard to provide a faith-based environment nurturing children with the same values at home. St. May School is not just a student’s academic world. It becomes their second home – their family.”
St. Mary School offers a band program through Music Education beginning in grade 4. Extracurricular programs include “Bright Knights” Chess Club, Bell Choir, a running club, and Drama Club. The school has an active Student Council and Yearbook Club. Parent volunteers organize Daisies, Brownies, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts, which meet after school on our campus. St. Mary School has a dynamic athletic program, which includes cheerleading in grades 4 – 8 and basketball and volleyball for students in grades 5 – 8.
Parent volunteering is always welcome, and very much appreciated, at St. Mary School. In fact, you can find parents and grandparents serving up nutritional hot lunch or fresh salad and soups from the salad bar, all prepared on-site, daily. Parents also help plan numerous events that the entire St. Mary School community can enjoy, including a Daddy Daughter Dance, Mother Son Evening Out, Men’s Golf Outing, Bunco for Breast Cancer and so much more.
Bus service is available for those families who reside in the Mokena Public School District #159 for a fee.
